We're really pleased to say we raised £600 at Sunfest beer festival at the Rising Sun on Fulwood Road.
It was the second year that we've been invited by Abbeydale Brewery and had a stall selling cake and savoury goods for those hungry beer drinkers.
This year, the money will be split equally between Mental Health Action Group Sheffield, our charity of the year, and Cavendish Cancer Care, who Abbeydale are supporting this year.
A massive thanks to Laura Rangeley for organising and all our bakers and volunteers. Thanks once again to Abbeydale Brewery for inviting us back!

Seven Hills WI were invited by the Sheffield brewery to create their own beer called Not Just Jam, a lemon and earl grey tea flavoured pale ale.
The beer was the signature ale at Abbeydale’s SunFest beer festival at the Rising Sun pub in Fulwood this July and was also sold in pubs across Sheffield and the UK.
Abbeydale have donated 10p from every pint to Seven Hills WI’s charity of the year. Combined with donations from the festival, the total raised was £1277.
Grace Escott-Tebbutt, President of Seven Hills WI, received a cheque from Director of Abbeydale Brewery, Sue Morton, at last Thursday’s meeting (Thursday 17 November 2016).

Grace said: “We had so much fun brewing the beer and zesting 100 lemons by hand for the special recipe. I’m so pleased we could raise so much money for Light Sheffield and we’re very grateful to Abbeydale Brewery for the opportunity and their generosity.”
Sue Morton, Director of Abbeydale Brewery, said: “We’re delighted the beer was a success - it was definitely one of my favourite ales we’ve brewed this year. It’s fantastic we could help raise so much money for a worthwhile cause.”
All the money raised will go to Light Sheffield, a local charity run providing support across Sheffield to families affected by perinatal mental health illnesses, including post natal depression and anxiety. Members of Seven Hills WI voted to support Light Sheffield as their charity for 2016.

SHWI Brew
One of our newest members, Laura Rangeley works for Abbeydale and knows how much some of our contingent love a good beer so she suggested we pair up and create our own beer which would be Abbeydale's special beer for their ever-popular SunFest beer festival. Not only did it mean mucking in and making our own beer - they were going to give us 10p from every pint sold to our charity of the year - Light Sheffield. Plus they wanted us to sell our ever-popular homemade bakes at the festival for the charity. How could we refuse such a generous offer?
Unfortunately I wasn't able to take part in the brew day as it fell on the Saturday when many of us were at Eroica festival in Bakewell with another charity cake stall. But 8 of our gang went along to help brew the beer with Laura. We weren't left to our own devices - Baxter, Brewer at Abbeydale, was there to show us the ropes.

By all accounts, a fun day was had by our SHWI brewers. Many can't actually remember the whole day - I wonder if the samples beers during the process have anything to do with that...

A month later and the beer was ready for the festival at the Rising Sun pub. And it was delicious - so delicious in fact, it was the first beer to sell out!
We planned to keep things simple for our bake stall as we wasn't sure how popular we would be at the beer festival. Would real ale drinkers fancy homemade cake over the professional bbq stand? Bex and the gang thought a good amount of savouries would go down a treat and they were right - sausage rolls, savoury muffins and cheese straws were sold quicker than hot cakes. Friends of SHWI, Smo-Fo donated some of their delicious bar snacks which we sold to soak up the beer. And Di's SHWI lived up to it's legendary status and was all gone in less than an hour.
On both Friday and Saturday, we sold out of all our baked goods and raised an amazing £800 over both days.

Also, big thanks to Laura B, Bex, Grace, Anna T, Laura K, Cat De L, Anna P who helped on the stall and all our other amazing SHWI-ers who made or bought bakes for the weekend.

SHWI Mad Skillz makes pizza at Craft & Dough
SHWI Mad Skillz is one of our spin-off groups organised by Di and Anna T. They organise bespoke sessions where SHWI members can learn a new skill in a smaller-sized group. This time, a group went to Kelham's Islands latest culinary hotspot, Craft & Dough for a spot of pizza-making.
Craft & Dough, The latest member of the Milestone
group opened in November 2014 after a successful series of ventures, including
their takeover of both the Wig and Pen and Fancie, which came on the back of
winning the best British Restaurant category in Gordon Ramsey's Best
Restaurants. The idea for Craft & Dough came when the Milestone group's
founder decided to capitalise on the well-known fact that beer and pizza are a
marriage made in heaven. Building on some of the pizza dishes served up at the
Milestone and using bakery produce made across the city at Ecclesall Road's
Fancie, Craft & Dough source many of their ingredients directly from Italy,
even the flour, and grow their vegetables super-locally at an allotment at
Kelham Island. Their array of beers, which take up a whole wall of the
restaurant, come from all over the world with fruit beers, IPAs and more,
including a Canadian import stocked nowhere else
in the UK and a sell-out Nigerian, wine-like Guinness.
For
the pizza prep and tossing, we had our own personal area reserved (#shwivips) and a table full of
fresh ingredients including dough balls, basil plants, home-made tomato and
herb passata and mini blocks of mozzarella from which to create our own
Margarita pizza. Chef demonstrated how to handle the dough (pressing,
stretching and gentle manipulation) while we tried the techniques for ourselves.
At no time during this process did anyone eat copious amounts of cheese
directly from the bag. Oh no. Ahem.

Unfortunately
for some of us (i.e. me, Anna P) it was more a case of craft and D'OH, as it
seems that even manipulating a piece of pre-made dough into a flat circle is
beyond my meagre skillset. I have no idea how I turned it into a phallic shape,
I bet I couldn't do it again if I tried! Some people may have THOUGHT they
witnessed a tantrum, but what they were ACTUALLY witnessing was a cunning ploy
in action. My ineptitude resulted in chef having to step in and leave me with a
professionally-handled base, winner!
Luckily,
everyone else was able to demonstrate more than adequate prowess and we took it
in turns to decorate our bases, before they were whipped away by chef to be
cooked in the pizza oven. Our SHWI chefs were in their elements, with stuffed
crust creations, ad hoc additional ingredients such as chilli oil and, er,
cheese mountains, demonstrating their invention. Gregg Wallace and Monica
Galetti would be proud.

Of
course, the proof of the pudding (well, pizza) is in the eating and I can
safely say that nobody was disappointed (as you can see from the pictures, we
quite frankly nailed it). I unfortunately missed out on the recent SHWI
Eats visit to Craft and Dough, and all I can say is if my own amateur creation
was that tasty, how good must the 'real' pizzas be? (Pretty damn awesome,
I am reliably informed by other SHWI-ers).

Once
again, I massive thank you to Di Coupe for organising for us a pizza-the-action (boom boom) and of course, to Craft and Dough for hosting us.
Mad
Skillz - we salute you (with a double chest thump, of course).
